Humans of Instagram
The HONY Instagram is less active than the Facebook hub, but it does serve it’s own unique functions in strengthening and advancing the fan community of HONY. Instagram, as a social media site, functions to bring images to life and speak for themselves. Instagram also offers a direct link to the most recent campaign which invites followers to donate and share with others, therefore supporting HONY's digital activism efforts.
Instagram functions through the power of images, and the followers of HONY use Instagram to stay connected with the stories as well as to tag, message, and respond in conjunction with other followers. On the right here we have a wide array of examples of content that HONY posts on all platforms. For Instagram specifically though, users are able to follow the stories more quickly and concisely through the grid format. As seen in the bio above, there is a link to a campaign fund for veterans suffering from PTSD. On the right here, the four images show the sequence of stories for this campaign. The opportunity to see them side by side makes for a strong connection and causes followers to not only keep up with HONY but also tag friends, respond with comments, and donate to the campaign. Their involvement pushes more involvement and speaks for why the campaign has surpassed it's fundraising goal by over fifty percent.
To the left is an example of a typical post on Instagram. This story covers a woman who is electrosensitive. Here 84,729 followers have liked the post, therefore communicating that they appreciate the post in some way or believe it is important. You can see that fans responded 2,207 times. Like Facebook, these messages are a mix of positive messages and the occasional cynic. The important comment here is the last one in which promotes and confirms a "rule" of the fandom in which they believe should be followed by all. This supports the inclusive nature and digital activism of the project.
